The Path Toward Your God Given Purpose

I joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in May, 1977 at Northwestern University, and have been an active member for many years. It has been the perfect vehicle for me to give back to the community. There are various programs to choose from, and there is something for everyone. Over the years I have worked alongside and met some incredible women. That is how I met Toni.

One summer Toni decided to get a fairly large group of sorority sisters together to fellowship. We met at a popular Mexican restaurant in Pasadena where she had reserved the patio. I knew most of the “sorors”, but there were many that I did not know. So when it was time to sit down for lunch I naturally gravitated toward the women that I knew. As we headed toward the table Toni informed us that there was assigned seating.  That was curious to me. If the objective was to put people together so that they could meet new sorors, how did Toni know who people knew or did not know?

Anyway, I ended up sitting with a soror that I did not know, and I liked her from the very start. Her name was Licia. As we chatted and got to know each other I learned that she lived in San Diego. I was surprised that she had made the two hour drive for the event. I learned a lot about Licia that day. We talked about her son, her education, and the sorority, but it wasn’t until she told me what she did for a living that I understood why we had assigned seating.

Our host could not have known it, and Licia did not know it, but this was a divine appointment. Out of all of the sorors at the luncheon I was seated next to Licia, who was in the military. Neither she or my host knew anything about my nonprofit,”My Own Two Feet,Inc.”, which was established to provide transitional housing and programs for homeless female veterans, but the Lord brought me to the luncheon and had Toni seat me next to Licia out of all of the women in attendance.

Do you honestly believe that  this was a coincidence? I believe that this was a divine appointment that was orchestrated by the Lord. It was further confirmation that my partner and I were on the correct path to our purpose. Subsequently, Sharon and I began to write down the many “coincidences”, and we filled up countless pages with similar types of occurences. I am convinced that there is no such thing as coincidence.
